The difference in Linux and BSD?
Hello,
I am learning to be a sys admin for Linux (Red Hat is what I am practicing on)... But what is the difference in BSD? I mean are they the same thing with different names? Are the commands the same and where file are located and what they do the same? If I can Administrator a Linux box can I on a BSD box? Thanks, Andrew |
"But what is the difference in BSD? "
Here is an article which compares BSD and Linux: http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd...bsd4linux1.php "Are the commands the same and where file are located and what they do the same?" Yes, for the most part. "If I can Administrator a Linux box can I on a BSD box?" Yes. ___________________________________ Be prepared. Ok that is what I need to know... Because I am going to offer support with a OpenSource project for FreeBSD and it did not accrue to me that I never have used FreeBSD before and that it might not be the same until after I submitted help..
Ok Thanks!, Andrew |
"I am going to offer support with a OpenSource project for FreeBSD"
Before you charge into your project you should read the section in the link I posted which explains the differences in the way Linux and FreeBSD handle the development process. ___________________________________ Be prepared. No it is offering support on commands to have the program run...
I will not be doing any programming just giving some help on shell commands and such.. I am reading that document though... Very interesting to me... Andrew P.S. this project is still in the planing stage also... |
does this really have to be asked again? try searching

What's BSD stand for??? I'm just curious...
|
Berkeley Software Design.
|
Berkeley Software Distribution.
There are tons of different answers, usually the two most popular are Berkeley Software Distribution and Berkeley Standard Distribution. That's the first time I've ever seen Berkeley Software Design. Do some extensive Googling, All indications point to it being * Software Distribution. |
From the bottom of the www.bsd.org page:

However - the copyright document for BSD makes mention of Berkeley Software Distribution. So we're both right.
|
Right, that's BSDI, I'm talking about the actual BSD code that originated in Berkeley before BSDI existed, but I see your point.

Oks Thanks
