random characters in editor
Hello all,
I am a newbie to FreeBSD and this problem as been with me from the start: I install FreeBSD 5.0rc1 using the "Standard" install with Dev+X config. All is well I can log into the machine and edit files and startx. Then I install CVSup and portupgrade, upgrade my ports and install vim using portupgrade -N. Again everything is going well. I then leave the machine for a night and come back and log in and try to edit a file using vim(which I used before I left IN X without a problem and also OUT of X with no problem) now though I get some crazy characters on the first line mainly: "25h" instead of the first three characters, also when I try and move around the file I get more strange characters appearing when it trys to scroll mainly: "25h" and "25l". If I edit the file with vi it is fine at least till I exit then I get some strange characters tacked onto the prompt: "1]" This also happens when I less the file and exit less. Now the thing that really doesn't make any sense is that it all works fine as long as I am in X or if I log in from another machine to this one via ssh. Could my keyboard map be messed up in the terminal only? How would I check? I am using a M$ Natural keyboard if that helps. This is really annoying! Any ideas?
Thanks for any help!
