i have installed over the weekend.. FreeBSD.. i left my Bootsector untouched during installation window.. after that i couldnt recover my windows 2000. so i installed Suse 9.1. .. and with Lilo i could boot my Windows.. but then FreeBSD didnt work.
So i reinstalled my windows 2000 in order to fix a boot Loader.
So i have downloaded a Boot Loader (GAG).. i could boot to FreeBSD from GAG with Problems.. i get an Warning such as.. Bootsector needs to be modified.. i say .. no .. then it boots to FreeBSD (it makes Sound noises, while this error popups, after boot.. not anymore)
I get always this warning error.. when i boot to FreeBSD with GAG.. shall i accept yes, if bootsector needs to be modified?? How can i fix this? i dont want this error.. im afraid.. if i accept yes.. it could windows disappear. and i dont want this..
Second.. While i used this GAG.. i couldnt load anymore Suse 9.1, the only thing i can do was.. NEW Install..
how can i recover Suse (although not really important for me, cause i wanna use FreeBSD), but good to know.. how to resolve these problems.
My suggestion is to use grub instead of GAG, configured through YaST.
You can recover SuSE by installing a bootloader for it. This does mean setting up Windows and FreeBSD on said bootloader, which will also clear the error message from GAG.
Firstly, boot of the SuSE install CD, and press Ctrl+Alt+F2. This will drop you into a command prompt. Run
Code:
mount device /media
where device is the device corresponding to the partition on which you installed SuSE(*). Now run
Code:
chroot /media
You are now running on the SuSE filesystem with the SuSE installer's kernel. From here, you should be able to run
Code:
yast2
and set up a bootloader (choose grub not lilo because lilo doesn't support FreeBSD). You will need to add the FreeBSD entry, and possibly the Windows entry as well.
(*)Edit: Mount the root partition here. You may also need to mount other partitions, like /boot, /usr or /var if you have them as seperate partitions, under /media/boot, /media/usr, /media/var etc. after mounting /media. I'm not sure, but the install disk may have a rescue option that does all this for you.
You didn't have to reinstall Windows to fix the boot sector. Boot the Windows CD, select recover/restore and perform a /FIXMBR. Or boot a DOS disk and type fdisk /mbr. You can also use the Windows boot loader to boot FreeBSD and Linux if you desire. This was discussed here at great length in the last week or two.

I have to, because i dont have floppydisc. If there was a way to put all those 4 Windows Boot Disks on CD. that would be cool.
I didnt say.. i cant boot from CD.. i can.. thats why i can install windows.. but i cant use recover console.. because i dont have the floppys.. and the other method is to recreate floppys..
so it sucks basically..
only way to repair stuff on windows is.. i need to have those repair tools on cd.. so i can fix them.. but not if they are on Floppys.
