problem using putty on openBSD 4.7 (fresh install)

well, today i installed openBSD 4.7 on my old routerbox.
went as it should be.
default term on the machine VT220 ,the 2 programms i install as 1st are EE and MC.

now it comes.
when i start EE in the box, no problem.
when i start MC in the box, MC is in black white mode, this sucks.

term mode in putty is xterm.
when i start EE in putty i got below message.
# ee
sorry, unable to use this terminal type for screen editing
#

when i start MC, i got the nice blue theme.
so, i guess something is screwing up.
i am not a guru, but on older versions i NEVER this kind of problems.
i can force putty to use VT220, but i hate the black/white mc.

how can i solve this.

thnxs.

PS
when i log in as user ,term is xterm, EE and MC are working as it should be.

Sorry, no one can help you with this =)

Booted up, no X, directly on the box (i.e. no ssh):

Code:
$ dmesg | head -n2
OpenBSD 4.8-beta (GENERIC.MP) #239: Wed Jul 28 10:36:23 MDT 2010
    deraadt@amd64.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC.MP
$ mc
# yup, that's black and white...hit F10
$ printenv > env_no_x.txt
$ startx
# start up xterm
$ printenv > env_x.txt
$ diff env_no_x.txt env_x.txt
<snip-some-output>
> TERM=xterm
> COLORTERM=
---
< TERM=vt220
<snip-remaining-output>
# exit out of X
$ COLORTERM= mc
# yay we have color! Hit F10
Doesn't matter what you set COLORTERM to. COLORTERM= works just fine.

Guess checking the man page would've been the "simple" way of figuring that out.
