PC BSD Packages and Questions

I am a little new to BSD. I tried it a few times before and I couldn't get it to work correctly. I just installed PC BSD and it works great. There are some differences between BSD and Linux that I need to get familiar with. For example what I need to know is how the packages work with BSD. Do I need source, Binary, RPM or is there something just for BSD? Any help an ideas would be great. I will also be using PC BSD as a server(as a Webserver,) on my old computer, in time. I need to get familiar with BSD first. Thanks.

IIRC PCBSD is basically FreeBSD with some extra GUI tools and a GUI installer, so everyhting should work more or less like FreeBSD. BSDs native packages are TGZs (very much like Slackware TGZs in principle). Read the man page for pkg_add and friends for the exact details. You can also easilt compile from source using the ports system (Gentoo basically took the concept of the ports system to make portage). BSDs make great Web servers, so good luck!

BSD uses binary packages as well as ports (source). You can find out more about these by reading the FreeBSD handbook since PC BSD is essentially FreeBSD with a GUI installer.

PC-BSD also has its own package management system. They have a some premade packages for download from their site, and they also have the application to change binaries to their .pbi files. You can learn more about it here http://www.pcbsd.org/PMInfo.html.

I switched to FreeBSD(the latest version) on my old computer. It doesn't work well on it. So I tried the new Madriva LE on my old computer and new computer. It works fine on my new computer but not that well on my old one. So I am now going back to PC BSD on my old computer and staying with that. It works better for some reason(and I know it is pretty much the same thing as FreeBSD but there is something different that lets it work on my old computer. I don't know what.) This thread has given me a lot of info to get started so I want to say thanks to everyone.
