pc-bsd hangs at Starting sshd.

hi all
i installed pc-bsd 1.0rc1, it installed nicely, i think. it was quick and easy to get on board. the problem i have is when i attempt to boot it, it boots up, goes through a quick flash screen "starting system" then goes back to CL, and it hangs at "Starting sshd." i've had some problems with this box and acpi, so i disabled that, but still no boot. i'm using grub as the bootloader, and this is the boot-up section for pc-bsd:

title PC-BSD
root (hd1,0,a)
kernel /boot/loader acpi_load="NO"

as i said, it boots, goes through the motions, then hangs at "Starting sshd."

any suggestions? i've googled, and found no help there. it's gotta be something simple, i would think. tia for you help

jay

Is this the first time sshd is starting? If so, it must generate the host keys before it can start up, and this can take some time. On really old hardware, it can take up to half an hour (by really old I mean 486 or early Pentium). On a modern system it should take no more than a few minutes. What kind of hardware do you have?

If that's not it, try going into GRUB and boot into single user mode and edit /etc/rc.conf to not start sshd at boot. Maybe if you try running it by hand there will be some sort of error message.

The problem you are having is actually related to sshd not being able to do a host name resolution. Be sure that the following lines are in your /etc/hosts file:
Code:
::1                 localhost.domain localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost.domain localhost
If you assign a permanent IP to your box as opposed to doing DHCP, then make sure that too is in your /etc/hosts file. For example, here is mine for my box here at work:
Code:
10.2.10.47 charles.stone charles
Make sure, too, that if you are not using DHCP that your DNS server has its IP in your /etc/resolv.conf file.

sshd should start almost immediately (say a second or two).

Cheers--
Charles
