kldload keeps giving "Exec format error"

I'm trying to configure my soundcard on my freebsd box here(crystal chipset, on-board). I create a new file /boot/kernel/sound.ko with the lines:

device pcm
device csa
options PNPBIOS

Every time I try to load it into the kernel with kldload I get that error. Any ideas here?

Well, I ended up skipping that and trying one of the included soundcard modules. After loading it with kldload, it gives me the output: Pcm0: <cs423x-pci> blah blah bah.......So I guess this one will do.

But after a reboot, I do a grep pcm /var/run/dmesg.boot and no pcm device is listed? Is there something I can do to have this module loaded automatically at boot time? I'd rather not go through the hassle of recompiling the kernel.

Before rebooting though, I start up kde and try to test the sound. I get nothing :( I have the latest version of aRTs installed. I'm wondering if there is any special configuration I need to do in order to get sound playback through this device.
