Have just installed FreeBSD and have a bit of a strange problem with the terminal and vi in particular.
Whenever I use the delete key I get the "~" charachter. Also vi just acts rather strangely, pressing "i" doesn't always get me in to insert mode and I can't use backspace.
I think this is something to do with keymaping but I've tried both UK keymaps in stand/sysinstall .
It's fine at the machine but when I SSH I get these issues.
Its probably the default vimrc that comes with FreeBSD, its pretty bare and literally everything else comes with a better one, I had the same problem and just copied over the nicer one from one of my other boxes. There's bunches out there if you google for them, if you want one that's a little richer, I can post it up here.
i too had this problem, it works fine thro root but not normal accounts right?
if so, there is something with the terminal the is using wrong environment settings (think its trying to use c shell settings)
try switching to bash. think thats what i did to fix it, happened to me ages and ages ago, cant really remember what i did, the answer is somewhere in www.devshed.com bsd forums
