Subjective, subjective. All three share a common heritage (and have certain similarities as a result), but each has unique aspects in philosophy and implementation. Read the project pages' stated goals, and try them out.

No, they don't all have the "same command line". Different default shells, different userlands. Again, there are also key similarities.

I agree with anomie. Your question is too subjective to answer. All three BSD variants you mention will do what you want. I prefer OpenBSD, but, am a long-time FreeBSD user. You should try a few of them and see what you like.

I have used OpenBSD and FreeBSD.

FreeBSD:

high performance and efficient.
Easier for those who have prior Linux experience
Very elaborate Handbook
If you need bleeding edge technology you should use FreeBSD

OpenBSD:

Secure and rock solid
You may need to unlearn and relearn a few things
Sometimes more flexible than FreeBSD (PKG_CACHE etc.)
Very good manual pages
Many software are old but time tested

Personally, I prefer FreeBSD for work and OpenBSD for geeky stuff.
OpenBSD gave me hard time getting my mouse working.

freeNAS was one I quickly came to love when I got in the BSD world, it has a very nice web interface you can connect to from anywhere, very straight forward to setup.. and you can copy the setups to multiple flash drives so you just boot from them, this way if the server explodes you still have your configuration handy.. don't forget to backup the drives too!

sorry for the late reply

Yes, freenNAS is nice. While 8.0 is out, I stick with 0.72 for now. For this “classic” line looks like they are also working on 0.75. When I checked 8.0 there was encryption missing IIRC and the new web interface might be a matter of taste.
