Question FreeBSD lockdown??

Hi,

i am currently new to freebsd, it was all going well.. installing ports (packages) and others..

now i got everything to run, atleast locally.
when i try
http://192.168.2.108/ (my local lan ip)
it works atleast from the server it self!
when i try that from my other local lan pc it gives me the "can not be displayed" error... i also supposably should have installed php5, now when i try the <?php phpinfo(); ?> command, it gives me a error, on local.

Is there something in freebsd what i should have gotten configured for being able to run all this?
like opening up ports, program control or something like it?

this is my outcome of netstat:

Code:
netstat

Simple, Because it is working (atleast a part) but something is stopping it, like my port 80 is blocked.
port blocking --> security

still, it's a freebsd question, which is why your thread has been moved to the xBSD forum... unfortunately i have no idea how freebsd's firewall works, so i can't be of any assistance - but i'm sure help is on the way... hang in there, good luck...

it works atleast from the server it self!
when i try that from my other local lan pc it gives me the "can not be displayed" error... i also supposably should have installed php5, now when i try the <?php phpinfo(); ?> command, it gives me a error, on local.
It works? It certainly shouldn't... not from the local server or anywhere else... since nothing is listening on port 80. How do you know it works?

Where do you type the <?php phpinfo(); ?> command? Is it in a webpage you're loading from the server you're not running?

Well, first you need to include an accurate netstat... if you're really running apache and it's on then you didn't include a full netstat. Which is my fault, when I read it I thought I saw a "-a" but it wasn't there... I'm just used to seeing it so I imagined it.

Code:
netstat -ap tcp | grep LISTEN
That should show me everything listening and on what it is listening. For example, if you look at mine you would see:

Code:
tcp4 0 0 *.6882 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.x11 *.* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 *.x11 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.svn *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.ssh *.* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 *.ssh *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.printer *.* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 *.printer *.* LISTEN
You can see I have several things running here and they're all listening on all the network interfaces. If, instead of *.svn, I had localhost.svn then I would know I was only able to connect to that service from this computer and not everywhere else.

If you have *.http somewhere in there, then you know apache is listening on all interfaces. That's when we look at firewall stuff.

Also, you should have your hostname set correctly for apache to work and at least an accurate hosts file so it can look itself up correctly.

If all of that is true, paste the contents of your rc.conf file (minus anything too private to share) so I can see what you're starting. By default you're not running a firewall so unless you're starting one then it's not behind it.

tcp6 0 0 *.ssh *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 192.168.2.108.imaps *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 localhost.imap *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 192.168.2.108.imap *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.pop3 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.pop3s *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 localhost.10025 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 192.168.2.108.smtp *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 localhost.smtp *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.3306 *.* LISTEN
now this is weird.. no http in there.. while i installed it..
the next question.. how to get it in there?
i appriciate that your helping me

Okay... and it shows the default apache page when you go to http://localhost/ ? Or some page that you've put in the correct directory for it to appear?

Have you tried restarting apache and seeing if you get any error messages. I'm not currently running apache so I don't know where it logs to. I think it's /var/log/http{something} but it could be something else there. It could be spitting out an error there... maybe.

Ok well this is my httpd-error.log:
[Wed Aug 2 22:26:12 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[Thu Aug 3 01:38:02 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[Thu Aug 3 03:44:58 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("")
[Thu Aug 3 03:52:25 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[Thu Aug 3 03:57:23 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[Thu Aug 3 04:04:55 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[Thu Aug 3 04:19:40 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[Thu Aug 3 04:31:09 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[Thu Aug 3 04:45:21 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[Thu Aug 3 13:02:56 2006] [alert] mod_unique_id: unable to gethostbyname("compnetix")
[/CODE]

host name compnetix = configured in /etc/hosts
compnetix is my netbios it should be forwarded to 192.168.2.108..
second... i installed 2 times apache ( apache22, first, after that one didn't work, i deleted it using pkg_delete, after that apache13 which is located in the directory apache /usr/local/www/apache

now is unable to gethostbyname a fatal error?
because the service is running, it says it will use 127.0.0.1
so that shouldn't make much damage will it?

but to be sure, how can i set a hostname correctly?
i mean, i do not own a domain ( i own 6 but not for this server just yet, this server is a test server, making it ready to take things over from windows 2003, )

If apache can't accurately figure out its ip address it will only open a local connection. 127.0.0.1 is linked to a pseudo interface and traffic on it never leaves your computer.

What does
Code:
nslookup `hostname`
do?

Also, what is the first line from /etc/resolv.conf and what are the relevant lines from /etc/hosts?

ok after working on it a bit, i have no idea how, apache works.. atleast a part of it, php doesn't work.

my local ip now shows the correct page, at my windows pc i can see the page!
Code:
compnetix# netstat -ap tcp | grep LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.ssh *.* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 *.ssh *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 compnetix.imaps *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 localhost.imap *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 compnetix.imap *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.pop3s *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.pop3 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.10025 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 localhost.10025 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.smtp *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.3306 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.http *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.https *.* LISTEN
this looks more promessing

now smtp doesn't work over the telnet at my other pc, but does work at local..
i use postfix (if i do telnet 192.168.2.108 25 it comes up as it should at local, but at the windows pc it's blocked, pop3 on the other hand, works...

so i only need help with 2 things:
smtp configuring, and php configuring,

i followed a tutorial, so it should work, but somehow it doesn't..
