A really good site for newbies that I used when I first started using FreeBSD was defcon1.org. Site includes plenty of networking tutorials as well as some cool scripts to accomplish simple tasks.

and the last link covers this site but my network is only half up (I see networks on scan but think I need to wright to a file to connect) so I figured I'd share my plan to keep out of my other distros and read all weekend from FreeBSD OS and there docs now on my drive:

I hope I'm not out of line by posting this, but there seemed to be a lot of questions over the years about the ease of installing FreeBSD.

If you're interested I've written a tutorial on how to build a FreeBSD desktop from scratch that was linked to by FreeBSD News, and their post was linked to by the US and Arabic Facebook page of BSD Magazine. It takes you through the process step-by-step as if you've never used UNIX or the command line, from the basic install process, to building programs from ports, to relevant system and security settings and having a fully functional desktop.

I've never played it so I can't say. I'm not an avid gamer anymore but have played Warzone, UFOAI and a few others on my FreeBSD boxen without any problem. The only game I have installed ATM being Moria.

Any graphic distortions are probably due to support for your graphics card, which you didn't mention. All mine are Win7 vintage or older with 3 having Intel cards, one an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 and the other a NVIDIA Quadro 1000M with Optimus Technology so they are pretty well supported, though Optimus was a pain of sorts.

Most members knowledgeable in that area recommend NVIDIA cards for newer machines using FreeBSD.
