freebsd 4.5 no root passwd ?

everything was working fine. then we had a power outage.

i turned my bsd box back on after the outage and went left to go to work.

for some reason when i ssh to my box it now takes like 8 minutes before it asks for a passwd. More importantly it no longer accepts my root passwd.
(yes sshd is set to accept root).

i log in as a user and everything seems fine... unfortunately i cant try to su root because i never added myself to wheel.

i havn't gone home yet , so i dont know if it will allow me in locally. but if not, how can i reset my root passwd and fix that ssh thingy.

Have you had a chance to boot to single user and fsck? Chances are you've got some filesystem damage, if you got shut down uncleanly.

when i got home i was able to log in as root. I dont know whether or not freebsd automatically runs fsck when not shut down properly. Otherwise , no i did not run fsck manually.

every thing seems to be fine but i stil get that error with sshd though.
