I've been experimenting with freeBSD. It installed in much the same fashion as linux, however I had some trouble getting x to work.
(it's an old PC, a Dell GXPro Pentium Pro 200 with only 32 megs of some sort of ram I can't seem to find any more of. )
anyhow it's got an old S3 video card in it, and it took some time and tweaking to get x to run. But I did it.
Now I have an issue. During the XF86Config , I opted for a virtual desktop. Well, I hate it. :-) I find it annoyning, and I want to get rid of it, but I can't quite figure out how. I don't seem to be able to run the XF86Config again, though I don't know why. I tried editing the file to remove the references to the virtual desktop, but it had absolutely no effect.
Any help will be appreciated. This one isn't a critical system, but I'd really like to familiarize with freeBSD and I want to use it darnit....
Not quite sure what is meant by "virtual desktop" because that's basically what X windows does. If youw ant to rerun the config program have you tried 'xf86config'? It's text based and I find it works quickly and easily. Once I have all the info about a machine I can get X up within 5 minutes with that program. GL.
