I have a program that is writtern for a BSD operating system. In the past I have tried installing and using BSD but it has been a nightmare. My question is can I run a BSD designed program on a Linux OS such as Redhat?
my first thought is why was the bsd installation a nightmare? did you try a stable version of freebsd? i reccomend freebsd if you do not need super security, its the easiest of the bsd's to get running.
What speciic program is this? FreeBSD and Linux are both (mostly) POSIX complient, so any reasonably modern program should compile on both without any trouble.
Whether or not a BSD app will compile on Linux really depends on how closely it's tied to the OS. What app is it? Does it depend on BSD libs and drivers or is it more like a standalone app?
I am trying freeBSD 4.4. In my first install, after I booted it up it went to the grub prompt and I couldn't figure what to do from there to start. I tired another install, I don't think I did anything different, and afterward it booted up this time and I got a command prompt. I tried startx and the gui started to load up but then went all funny, a window appeared bigger than the screen, if I tried to move the window it would have a trailing tail and cover the screen, basically it didn't work.
I was trying to figure out how to get my wireless card to work but had no luck. I'm still looking for a wireless networking guide using prism2 drivers.
I beleive the program relies on BSD libraries, so I will probably try and learn BSD.
The prism2 card should work just fine. I've got a FreeBSD 4.5 (might be 4.6) laptop that recognized my card right away. It's been a while since I set it up, but I recall it working OK.
