Me and IT
By brianL at 2008-08-08 08:20
What better time to start a blog than after a sleepless night? It shuts down the rational left hemisphere, and gives the creative right hemisphere full rein. That's my excuse, anyway. I think blogs should be about anything and everything of interest to the blogger. And this one will be. Naturally, I'll start with:

Ubuntu, a virtual and a real Windows XP
By bitpicker at 2008-08-08 03:26
Here's something I just noted while working with Ubuntu 7.10 and a Win XP I still need for three programs I use frequently at work, namely Corel Draw, Dreamweaver and our ERP software.

Ubuntu by itself will run within 150 MB on my machine, which is equipped with 1.5 GB of RAM. The remaining RAM is marked as 'free' by gkrellm, though I realize that this doesn't mean it's not used as cache or buffer; but it is available for programs as they get started. Swap space is completely unused.

TrueCrypt - Free opensource on the fly Disk Encryption tool for openSUSE Linux
By rbkumaran at 2008-08-07 17:16

TrueCrypt is a free opensource software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data are automatically encrypted or decrypted right before they are loaded or saved, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct password/keyfile(s) or correct encryption keys. Entire file system is encrypted (e.g., file names, folder names, contents of every file, free space, meta data, etc).

Answers to weblog entries
By donax at 2008-08-07 04:04
I am not sure I can use LQ Weblog for information on projects such as the use of GAPipeline-0.3.0

I could not find a way to publish edited dialogues, not even a way to comment on a weblog entry. So far I leave out LinuxQuestions which anyway seem to be more desktop-related.

A nice place for some questions, but not for my needs.

Genome Analysis Pipeline
By donax at 2008-08-07 03:50
I started searching for some information regarding compilation of a genetics analysis program, source GAPipeline-0.3.0.tar.gz

The source is specific for a sequencing machine called Solexa.

I will try to keep information about using and working with the system side of the Solexa software on this weblog besides our internal site.

Cairo-Dock is a simple but effective feature rich dock for your openSUSE Linux. Distro hopping with dissapointment. Is the perfect distro out there?
By txos at 2008-08-06 11:44
I have recently been distro hopping to find the perfect balance of Linux for me. The computer that In the past I used a 450 megahertz P3 processor with 512 megs of ram running CentOS 4.5. I ran that for about a year and a half with no complaints. It seemed fast and rock solid. I will admit I set it up as a samba, ssh and web server so I was not asking a lot of it. I have since then aquired a slightly beefier 1 gig Athlon system with more ram. When I first got it I installed CentOS 5.1 on it and it seemed to work great. It wasn't long before I got the distro hopping bug.

Debian Xfce live CD dissapointing
By richag77 at 2008-08-06 10:27
I've recently received a Debian xfce live CD and it is the most trimmed down live CD that I have ever seen. In fact it almost has nothing on it(Just a file manager and some utilities and a browser that doesn't open). Download all the apps you want, you say. That would be the way to go if I could find the icon or menu item to click on to do the install. Is this just a way of distributing rather expensive drink coasters or is there some special way that is a guarded secret of how to install this OS?
