Description:

Fantastic printer / scanner / photocopier with windows operating systems. Installing and getting the thing to work on linux however has been a challenge and is still not over. Printing quality is super though and having the ability to scan and copy within the one item of hardware is a god send.
Seems so far to get this to work you will need updated drivers for linux, and possible kernel changes. I bought redhat 9 with a book called beginning redhat linux 9, which have annoyingly left out the kernel souce files. which kinda leaves me stuck unless i download a different kernel version with its source files.
overall the printer is good and well worth buying if you can get it working on linux. Good luck :)

My particular one is the "psc1210" (what's with the lower-case letters in the model numbers nowadays?)
Just bought it today, so take this with a grain of salt.
Worked out of the box. Ignore the instructions about "how to use with Windows/Mac OS" and just turn it on and hook up. Then go to PrinterDrake in Mandrake Control Centre.
It correctly identified the printer and that it is also a scanner. It warns not to use the usual "ScannerDrake" for this. Was able to print, and XSane was able to scan okay.
Only reason for not 10/10 is that I haven't used it extensively yet, so being cautious.

In Fedora Core 2 and Mandrake 10 drivers are included, and the printing and scanning works flawlessly.

9.1 did not find the printer, could not configure printer or scanner.
10.0 did not find the printer. It configured the scanner but when I tried to scan it said no scanner on system. Ditto on 10.1. I was hoping to throw windows in the garbage with 10.0 but it appears USB support is still lagging at ML.

I bought a PSC 1215 and the hardest part was to unpack it and connect the cables. (I'm not 100% certain of what sets the 1215 apart from the rest of the 1200 series. I think it might support slighly bigger print cartridges or have the upgraded firmware from 1315?)
After running the selftest I basically did "apt-get install hplip" and it was up and running. Printing works flawlessly and the scanner surpasses my needs.
Informative web page at "http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/index.php
".
HP's unix heritage really shows.
