Description: The 600X is a very nice laptop, and I was pleased when Linux worked on it without many problems. The sound/video cards were all detected flawlessly by both Slackware and Redhat. The TrackPoint mouse also worked fine, without any extra configuration needed. The only problem I had was with the winmodem modem, which I was never able to get working. I eventually puchased a Linksys 'Fast Ethernet NP100' card and used my LAN for internet.

everything works great. default install of the original kernel (2.2.20) did not handle my sound card but a manual config and upgrade to 2.4.27 fixed that. i have not worked with the modem to the problems mentioned above have not plagued me. i was able to easily install the WPC11 v3. pcmcia was not a problem either.
oh yeah. one more thing. i upgraded the ram with an additional 256mb and this thing can do anything. it gets an A+ from me. I would suggest it to anyone.

Did a complete overhaul on the suggestion of a friend to try FreeBSD. After three days of an incompatibility no related to the thinkpad (wireless card problem) i decided to reinstall Debian. i had an older version of Woody rc2 which defaults 2.2.20 kernel with the option for 2.4.20. knowing that i was going to be upgrading the kernel anyway i decided to use the 2.4.20 kernel and use my thumbdrive to load the latest 2.4.31 and the linux-wlan-ng drivers. i know.. long story for a small bug but the usb drivers in the 2.4.20 kernel don't seem to like the usb port. dmesg reports that the insertion of the drive was recognized but the device was refusing the assignment. i am not sure what that means and i don't have the exact error cause i don't have the lappy here and i have already upgraded the kernel so i can't reaccomplish the error. the error can be caused by several things but after the upgrade i have had no repeat of the bug. I still give the lappy a 10 for compatability.

I am a total Linux newbie and I was able to get Slackware 10.0 running on my IBM Thinkpad 600x with no problems at all. Everything seems to have been detected automatically.
