Description: The hp pavilion ze4420 is a nice notebook that isn't much for gaming(although I'm still asked to bring it to lans so others can use it) and the thing is nice and reliable for devlopment and basic school stuff. However, it does get hot and if you leave it on too long it will overheat if the environment is also hot. I do not have random lockup problems with it either. I have not installed the linux video drivers for this laptop for I do not care enough to but I have found a faq about the laptop that explains how to and gives you his xf86config and a directory to find the patches. If you are wanting to use this for gaming but are a newb then you will probably want somthing with an nVidia chip because they are really easy installs. This thing is actually very good for the price and if you're willing to learn how to patch the kernel off the bat to play a game of tux racer go for it. I have used slackware 9.1 and mandrake 9.1 and mandrake didn't automatically have drivers for the video card but it seemed to support more of it with specific drivers(although slack worked just as well).

Once power management is set up properly it tends not to run so hot. Keeping compressed air to clean out the fan every once in a while is a must, as it seems to collect a lot of dust. The PowerNow options in the 2.6 kernel help alot with the heat, as well.

With some time you can get this laptop working almost perfectly with linux. I'm still having a few issues with PCMCIA, but I trust I can resolve those with some more work.
