SuSE 9.2

Curently it works quite nicely with Linux.
Former problems has been;
*no wlan drivers,
*only 1 meg video ram and 640x480 resolution,
*only 1280x1024 resolution after videomemory patch
*640x480 framebuffer resolution,
*no acpi sleep, suspend to ram, hibernate,
*problems with lid button crippling X,
*no speedstep
Suse is the best distro for this laptop because of the enhanced speedstep support and the powersave daemon, all problems not mentioned below is to be concidered fixed:
Curent problems with SuSe:
*only 1280x1024 resolution before adding third party 1400x1050 patch, works after patch.
*640x480 framebuffer resolution,
*no acpi sleep, suspend to ram, hibernate (sleep is reported to work by some)
Only thing needed to do in suse is to add the 1400patch manually

All hardware is automatically detected and works flawlessly out of the box with Mandriva 2006, with the exception of the integrated wireless. To use the integrated wireless, you must use a Windows driver with ndiswrapper, which is included with the distro, as well as a graphical utility to easily install the driver and configure the device. TV out is untested, but has not worked with any other distributions so far (Xandros, Mandriva 2005 LE, Mandrake 10.1, SuSE 9.2), but that seems to be the only caveat.

Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)

The biggest problem I had with Ubuntu 6.06 and 6.10 was resume from suspend.
Once I installed 7.04, resume worked straight "out of the box"--no futzing with config files or installing extra software.
Sound, multimedia keys, screen resolution--everything is detected and working perfectly without extra tweaking.
The only thing I don't know is the wireless card compatibility. When I bought the Inspiron 500m originally, I bought it without a wireless card. So after deciding to put Ubuntu on it, I made sure to get a wireless card that worked well with Linux--I purchased an Intel Pro Wireless 2200.
