The MC68040 series processor is the successor to the MC68030 and the immediate predicessor to the first generation PowerPC chip. The MC68040 processor has an FPU and therefore is compatible with the M68k linux project.. HOWEVER, the MC68LC040 chip, which is a CHEAPENED version of the MC68040 DOES NOT have the FPU and therefore is NOT linux compatible, the MC68LC040 appeared in various mac LC machines, some performas, and the powerbook 500 series. In some of the desktop macs with MC68LC040s, the chip can be replaced by a straight up MC68040 to make the computer linux compatible however.
