Following advice for the ML-1710 on www.linuxprinting.org I installed the CUPS driver for the Samsung ML-4500 (Foomatic/GDI) and the printer has so far worked perfectly. It is also much faster (and probably cheaper to run) than any inkjet I've used. However I could not get the linux printing package and drivers supplied by Samsung to work.

It also works fine for printing from Windows through Samba. So far I haven't managed to print through the network from Mac OSX, although the Mac OSX driver for the ML-1710 available on Samsung's support page works OK if the printer is attached directly. This may just be my ignorance of OSX.

A good printer if you are short of space - it has an very small footprint. Haven't tried much graphics, but the test page looked OK.

As for me, I had no luck using LinuxPrinting.org drivers and was getting a bit pissed off... until I finally tried to use Samsung drivers from a supplied CD. It works great!

It performs well in both text and 600dpi graphics, and with toner saving setting it's really cheap in use.

I used included installer to extract drivers on my x-windows workstation and then copied them to my print server machine.

Some people complain about LPT access though, so I recommend using USB.

For printing through Samba I use CUPS generic postscript drivers.

The difference between models 1710 and 1710P is parell port. 1710P has both USB and parell.

The installation was easy - I downloaded cups then used the driver cd. Cups is included for a number of distributions, but not for my Debian (downloading is a better option because you have the most recent version).

There's a graphical installer on the cd. It requires two or three clicks and drivers are installed. All you need to do later is to open KDE/GNOME printer configuration and add the new printer (you can also configure it to you needs). Then you can print your test page.

I have it running using USB currently. Parell port is not forking for now (probably because of my BIOS port settings).
