I had a problem whereby I couldn't download any pictures under Windows 2000 using the provided Canon software and the USB transfer cable.
I booted with a LiveCD (PC LinuxOS 2K4) and was able to download the pictures using gphoto2 and the USB transfer cable. This saved some important photos for me, as even a memory card reader under windows also didn't allow access to the saved pictures. I reformatted the card after I recovered the pictures and then Windows decided that it would read it :)
It's great when free software works better than that which the manufacturer provided.
