The printer works very well with CUPS. One has to choose the Canon 7100 driver!
In some cases, while configuring a new printer (e.g. black&white print) the printer doesn't work because you picked the wrong parallel port. For me, there are always two ports: a simple Parallel port 1 and a Parallel port 1 (Canon). I think, you have to choose the first of both.
