Kernel (uname -r): 2.4.20-8
Distribution: RedHat 9

I haven't tested this with hot-swapping, but it seems to work great! Before bootup, put the drive into your USB slot and at a terminal type:

$ mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /flash

The filesystem is VFAT (FAT32) and it is an SCSI device (/dev/sda1).

I can read and write to it without any problems.
