Description: This is somehow older type of CD-Writer made by Yamaha in 1998 or 1999.
It reads CD's and Data-CD's and some VCD's in 24X.
It writes upto 8X.
It uses slow media rewritable disks and I think it does not support writing on all rewritable disks, It can also not write to disks larger than 700MB.

here is my syslog message:
kernel: scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAP

kernel: Vendor: YAMAHA Model: CRW8424E Rev: 1.0g

/sbin/lspci output: cdrecord --scanbus: 0,0,0 0) 'YAMAHA ' 'CRW8424E ' '1.0g' Removable CD-ROM

Kernel (uname -r): Mandrake 10
Distribution:

I used one of these with my mandrake distros starting with 7.2 and going to 10.0 with no issues whatsoever. Worked just fine. Burned a LOT of CDs with it.

Cycled it out of linux box and into windows box last fall when I put a DVD burner in its place.

Compuvest has this unit cheap!!! I paid 28$ with shipping to ID. I shut down my computer, installed the unit and it was working with no problems!

It works very well with cdrecord. Does NOT work with K3B.

I am using Fedora Core 2 on a 166mhz FSB with an AMD duron @ 900mhz with 256MB memory.
