Description:
|
This is the next model up from the Epson CX3200. It is an all in one device that has printing, copy and scanning capabilities. It connects via USB and is recognized (as printer, as scanner) on initial boot with hotplug installed. I had no problems getting both the printer and scanner sides configured using a combination of cups gimp-print ghostscript in these distros: RedHat9/FedoraCore1, Mandrake9.2, Suse9.0, Gentoo, ArchLinux, Debian and FreeBSD. The success I had was all with kernel 2.4.24, with the 2.6 kernel it takes quite of bit of manual configuring to get it working properly and recognized in various applications but its well worth it.
I purchased the printer in January 2004 at CompUSA (local computer retail store) for $129 USD.

Goes even for Epson Stylus CX3200 color.
No actual configuration needed, just manual selection of model.
Works perfectly!
p.s. Also works across CUPS from a Libranet 2.7 Classic distribution.

First apt-get hotplug, don't plug in the USB cable until after hotplug is installed. Do a tail -f /var/log/messages right before you plug it in. When it is plugged in, you should hear some beeps and see output on the /var/log/messages saying you have a bidirectional printer. This tells you that Linux is detecting your device. If it doesn't detect it, modprobe these modules:
hid
usb-uhci
printer
usbcore
Installation is pretty similar to what is said in the linuxprinting.org FAQ at http://www.linuxprinting.org/epson-...-Stylus_CX5200. You can apt-get alien and then 'alien package.rpm' to convert all the rpms to debs, and then install them with 'dpkg -i package.deb'. Do this for the pips rpm mentioned in the FAQ. You will also need to 'apt-get install cupsd cupsys-driver-gimpprint escputil ijsgimpprint gimpprint-doc' Then you need to start the ekpd daemon by doing '/usr/local/EPKowa/SCX5100_5200S/rc.d/ekpd.debian start'. Now, if you start ekpstm, you should see a window open showing the ink levels on your printer.
Now, instead of downloading the ghostscript rpms, just 'apt-get install gs gs-common gs-esp'. Then just follow step 9 in the FAQ, making sure that you add the printer with "EPSON Inkjet Printer #1 (Photo Image Print System)" selected as the driver and "EPSON Stylus C82, CUPS+GIMP-print v4.2.5(en)" selected as the model. That's it!

Excellent compatibility !
After i plugged it into the PC, i went to MCC (Mandrake Configuration Center) and selected "Printer" -> Add, Epson cx5200 -> installed gimp-print + sane packages in a minute -> checked its configuration -> worked on it.
The whole process took less than 5 minutes :)
Scanner that I use with Xsane and Kooka is quite good even if a bit slow.
OCR with gOCR would be easier if i wans not born in with-accent-tongue country ;)
Price is for a used one that actually showed a printer problem (100% hardware).
Note that I'll review Epson new RX3400 soon, and see if it works as well.
