I shut down my computer and let Kudzu worry about configuration. Kudzu deleted my old printer and installed the driver for the Brother HL-1440.
I went to System Settings (FC2 with KDE) then selected new printer, had the unit recognized and tested in under 2 minutes.
The stock 2 MB memory is substandard if you want to print multi-page documents. I typically print 10-15 page documents. With the 2mb memory you can have another cup of coffee while transferring. I bought the 32mb memory card and now I get 15 pages in about 2-3 minutes from print icon to last page.
The memory installation can be tricky. I am used to working with electrical/electronics in confined spaces, so installing the memory was fairly simple. If you are not accustomed to these conditions, it will take about 5 to 10 minutes. If you have seen PC boards or the insides of computers, where the memory goes is obvious; it just requires some amount of finger dexterity.
If you print alot of monochrome, this unit is a great workhorse. If you print alot, install the memory.
I have seen 3000 page toners on the internet for about 60$. This is a low cost printer with a low cost maintenance lifecycle.
