Haven't tested DVD-R(W) compatibility however has functioned perfectly for DVD+R(W) and DVD-RAM. To use DVD-RAM mount 'rw' as opposed to 'ro'. Use growisofs to write DVD+R(W) and dvd+rw-format to perform initial formatting. There is no need to blank a DVD+RW before burning something else to it.

I use it with DVD-R(W) and no problems up to date. For recording software I use cdrecord.dvdpro (free as in beer but not as in speech, from the same guy that maintains cdrecord) and xcdroast as a front-end.
