This is more a general observation. I've tried this with many different versions of the 8139 based NICs.

Some will just work fine right away, others will only work with half duplex, others I couldn't get to run (all of them ran in other OS ,eg winwdows, fine)

I have stopped using 8139 based cards as I find them unpredictable as to if they will work without problems on linux or not.

Very compatible. My lspci is slightly diffrent:

Uses the 8139too module which is in basically in every kernel source.

The RealTek RTL8139 is detected and drivers installed automatically for slackware.

People say that Realtek are crap, well the may be a bit cheaper and slower but they're damin compatable with everything.

I was building a router and the computer I was using had only one network card. I went down to the store... grabbed the cheapest PCI card they had and bought it (once I was assured I could return it if it failed to work). I brought it home, slapped it into the box, turned it on and away we go. It was detected flawlessly and has never given me an issue.

Okay, it gave me one problem... when I dropped the box from desk height onto the floor (long story) the card became slightly unseated and it took me a long time to figure out why it wasn't sending or receiving. Of course, once I reseated it everything worked fine again.

And $15 is a lot better than the 3com card I have in my other computer that I bought a long time ago. They both work great (and I think the 3com is better quality) but this was about 18% of the cost of the other one.

In the past few weeks, I have installed many different distributions on my computer to see which one I liked the best, and this card was detected automatically out-of-the-box on EVERY single distribution I tried! It works fine, it's fast, and I haven't had any reliability problems with it at all. Not to mention it's a very low-profile card, hardly takes up any space in my case, so I can put it close to my video card with no problem. Here are all the distributions I've tried (so the card works with all of these):

Redhat 9
Fedora Core 1 and 2
Mandrake 9.1
Knoppix 3.2 (even with HD install)
Slackware 9.0

So if you need a cheap 10/100 ethernet card, go for this one!

Works very intermittently. Tried with 2.4.21 and 2.6.5 kernels and the nic is very occasionally working. Didn't even work in Windows. Tried a different Realtek nic, and that only worked with SuSE 9.1 (2.6.5 kernel), but coldplug picked it up instantly.

Bought this ages ago. It's lain dormant in my PC 'til now - I've only just got round to finally setting up that network.

I beleive the trademarked phrase is "It Just Works."

I didn't have to do anything to it. I'd definately recomend it - looking back at the review, there was only one person who didn't like it - I reckon they must have either had a dodgy card or a funny computer.

An excellent piece of kit.

(I'd be interested to know if it works with many other UNIX-like OSes - somebody said it worked with NetBSD, so I guess there's a fair chance it does.)

Note - didn't work until I disabled Plug and Play on my Asus motherboard.

It uses IRQ9 on my system and there was PCI steering issues with Plug and Play being enabled

So if you are getting "device busy......" or some other foul chat like that, just disble plug and play in you motherboard's bios and all should be well

Works well.

Did have one major issue. If device continually reports "Busy or not responding" then disable Plug and Play in your BIOS settings. It appears to be an issue with PCI steering.
