Description: 1440 x 720 dpi Photo-quality color and up to 8 ppm black text printing; 3.5 ppm color text and graphics. Uses up to 8.5" x 11" paper size, but can do some envelopes as well. Photo quality printouts on glossy photo paper isn't too bad either.

I've been able to get this running using CUPS and foomatic in KDE 3.1/RH9. In fact, foomatic has an entry for this exact printer so setup should be very easy. Just be sure the printer is turned ON before you go to set it up, so Linux and find it, since it's USB powered. A USB cable does NOT come with the printer, though a couple (about 1/2 full) ink cartridgesa re installed (one black, one color), and a Windows drivers CD. No Linux drivers but since foomatic has it, you don't need the CD. I bought the printer about a year or so ago new for $50. Don't know where they can be found anymore. Ink for it can be found at Cartridge Systems Ink (It's not OEM but it's good ink). The link for that is: http://www.cartridgesystemsink.com/ and they have very low prices and good quality ink.

Kernel (uname -r): 2.4.166-athlon
Distribution: SuSE 9.0

SuSE automatically sets up multiple print instances to allow quick selection of output resolution (from draft gray to photo). apps should send print output to "kprinter" or "ipp" if using cups.

foomatic/gimp-print driver

"mtink" printer utilities( nozzle clean, ink level check, etc.) available at
http://xwtools.automatix.de/ or check your distro disks.

ink is cheap by comparison to other brands, about $16 each for black and color tanks.

i expected to have had to replace this printer by now. at $50, you expect a disposable, but it just keeps going.

putting the C40UX and C44UX side by side, i suspect it's the same printer under the plastic. the C44UX has a slightly higher page per minute rating and is still available, the C40UX is out of production.

Works right away with the KDE printer configuration utilities. Full control over resolution and other print settings via the GUI tools or CUPS. Used the foomatic driver, as previously mentioned.

Cheap ink at extracartriges.com. About $6 a cartridge.

Had USB issues with a previous motherboard where the printer would "go away" from the USB connection requiring a restart of the printer via CUPS or even a reboot. This has never happened with a new motherboard now so I don't think it was the printer's fault.

Good, inexpensive printer with decent output and inexpensive ink.
