The M1212nf works well via ethernet under Slackware64 13.1 and hplip 3.10.9. All print functions work, fax was not tested. Scanning works via proprietary binary hplip plugin (with hplip/sane) but only in monochrome/gray scale (no linux color scanning).

Edit: Slackware 13.37 with sane-1.0.22 and hplip-3.11.3a now supports full color scanning.
Edit 2: When setting up this printer via hplip/cups, you will need to manually add the printer via hp-setup, do not use the automatic scan. Select hpijs driver, not hpcups, if monochrome/grayscale images print in reversed color, ie a black page with white text.
