All of the controller based modems, also called serial or hardware modems will work on any Linux Distro . The external USRobotics as well as other brands that were designed for commercial use are far superior to any others and even ancient ones like this model are excellent buys and will run virtually forever. This one requires a modem cable NOT A NULL MODEM CABLE!
I have 4 I paid 14.00 each for plus 2.00 for the cord {also used} and 5.00 for an RS232 to USB adapter and they are used on Puppy Linux and Ububtu 9.04 boxes. Set up is simple in Puppy , plug it in and add the info in the dialer. Ubuntu requires running setserial if you need to connect by usb ,making sure you do not have NetWork Manager added and installing Gnome=PPP for the dialer . You can do it manually through WvDial if you like but Gnome-PPP is a gui for WVDial and it is in Synaptic.
