Description: The mx870 works well in linux provided that the drivers from canon's website are used for both the printer and scanner. Printer: cnijfilter-mx870series-3.30-1-i386-rpm Scanner: scangearmp-mx870series-1.50-1-i386-rpm
Website says Fedora 12 or OpenSuse 11.2 although I'm sure that the packages will work as long as the proper dependencies are installed on your system that are listed

4-in-1 device: print, scan, copy, Super G3 fax
Print speeds: up to 9.4 ipm in black
Print resolution: up to 9600 x 2400 dpi
2.5 inch LCD with Canon Easy Scroll Wheel
Built-in duplexing
35-sheet ADF
Two way paper feeding: 150-sheet cassette, 150-sheet rear tray
Built-in card reader with PictBridge/USB connectivity
Five individual ink cartridges
Connections: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0
Energy Star qualified, RoHS compliant
This printer is quiet compared to many HP's and Epson's that have a tendency to screech. The printer warmup to print the first page is also just a few seconds. The scanner can be used with GIMP only AFAIK. I bought mine for $129 at Cosco and so far am very pleased with it. Wireless printing and scanning are the Shiznit ():P

After downloading the drivers, you can't get the printer to be recognized then do this

1: In Firefox type http://localhost:631/
2: Go to Add Printers and Classes Tab
Click Add Printer >Cups will look for a new printer. It may or may not find one
Under Network Printers click the radio button "LPD/LPR Host or Printer"
Type in the box lpd://{your network address}/{printer name}
Network address is listed on the printer screen under: Device Settings/Lan Settings/Confirm Lan Settings/(W)LAN setting List
Printer name is there too and probably just a long number.
3: Give your printer a name
4: Choose "or provide a ppd file" type in /usr/share/cups/model/canonmx870.ppd
5: Click Add printer
6: Test it out by printing a test page and hopefully it works
Keywords: aio mfc duplex wifi
Connection Type: ethernet usb wifi

Would you recommend the product? yes | Price you paid? (in USD): $149.00 | Rating: 8

Kernel (uname -r): 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.x86_64
Distribution: Fedora 14

The User Guide to this product says it does not support Linux (!!)

------

However, Canon has made Linux drivers available. They link to 32bit open source libraries, so if you have a 64bit system there is some effort necessary to find and install compatible 32bit libraries. (32bit and 64bit libraries can safely co-exist). Less than an hour of clicking around.
