Description:
|
This laptop works decently enough with Linux except for a few gotchas, the wireless lan wont work until you append pci=use_crs as a boot parameter, the nvidia video with xorg is touchy if you use NVidia's driver it can mess up the display requiring some tweaking of xorg.conf with Option "ModeValidation" "NoTotalSizeCheck"
The good news is I found a few distros that work on this laptop out of the box without too much massaging, OpenSuse-11.2, ubuntu-9.10 & Mint-8 of the three Mint is what I am sticking with for now for its audio/video & browser plugins being already in place.
my favorite distro is Slackware which booted painfully slow and xorg was impossible even with the xorg.conf fix (unless I am missing some other tweak that i have not found yet)
I am not even going to attempt to use anything like gentoo or any other distro that requires a lot of source code building.

i have since switched to Debian Squeeze (testing) on this Acer Aspire 5739g. and it does a little better than the mint/ubuntu flavored distros or it could be just that my personal taste in Linux distros tend to favor the old school distros
