Kernel (uname -r): 2.6.29.6-smp
Distribution: Slackware 13 - 32 bit stable

Overview:
The Acer Aspire One D250-1417 netbook worked well out of the box on Win7 Starter. The Atom N270 processor does not support a 64 bit OS but does have hyper-threading so I installed Slackware 13 - 32 bit smp. USB was used initially to boot and install the OS. Everything works!

Pros:
  • Low initial investment
  • Good hardware
  • Can boot from USB.
  • BIOS is upgradable.
  • SMP kernel detects 2 virtual CPUs.
  • Touch pad, video, sound, webcam and mic were all recognized.

Cons:
  • Came with Windows 7 Starter
  • Came with 3-cell battery with 3 hour charge life. (upgrades available)

Comments:
  • The ethernet was not recognized without a driver update.
  • The wireless adapter LED did not illuminate and did not auto connect after suspend/hibernate without a driver update.
  • The touch pad did not have vertical scroll without a HAL policy update.
  • The mute, lower/raise volume Fn keys required xbindkeys to function.
  • I have not tried the multi-card reader yet.

Kernel (uname -r): 2.6.31-17-generic
Distribution: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

Almost everything works out of box, including webcam, SD card reader, USB, microphone, processor, GMA 950, Fn keys, touch pad, speakers and advanced ACPI features.

The Ethernet card will be supported out of the box on any distribution with kernel version 2.6.31-14 or higher. Any lower and you may experience problems.

The LED and dongle for the wireless card won't work, but the wireless works very well, with monitor mode and injection supported.

I give it an 8 for the two above problems, everything else will work well out of the box.

All in all, it has made a good Linux laptop for me. I definitely would recommend this to anyone in the market for a very cheap but very usable laptop.
