Bought this since i found the new X4500HD and esata attractive when my other board started to stop working correctly. Unlike my old board this does not have intel AMT on it, so no remote controlled booting etc.
Fitting notes:
the PCI-E is quite close to the only pci card slot so you may need an exhaust fitting card. My 6600GT is now uncomfortably hot next to the tvcard i have installed, reading at 70c idle and more loaded. This is different to fanspeed however which reports the temperature as higher!
Hardy will only boot in AHCI mode for the sata so please check you have this enabled. The Ubuntu intrepid disk i used because it wouldnt boot didn't appear to share this problem.
sound has some issues not working with the snd-hda-intel module unless you specify in the /ect/modprobe.d/alsa-base
Code:
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
If this doesnt work either try compiling latest alsa-drivers (alsa-driver-1.0.20) since I did both but the probe mask made the difference.
CPUFREQ seems to be acting really weird on this laptop. Several sources indicate different frequencies. cat /proc/cpuinfo reports 1.60ghz on my Q6600 while GKRELLM reports 2400~ The cpufreq utilities also say that the processor is at 1.60GHZ and the utilities do not change this no matter what setting is chosen. It doesn't feel any slower but the Q6600 is quite nippy anyway.
SENSORS
These appeared to be working fine although the accuracy was a little confusing at times. For example there is the CPU temperature which is higher than the core temperatures and in past experience this was always around 10c lower. The sensor that asusprobe2 appears to read for cpu temp though is the lower AUX. The board apparently has support for 5 fans although I have only spotted 3 inc the cpu cooler. These all appear to be pwm controllable although Q-fan seems to not let you go below the minimum in optimal mode (others unchecked)

UPDATE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suspend does not work correctly in hardy, even with kernel 2.6.28 (custom built)
The Hal interface appears to hang or something and it continuously believes the power button has been pressed.
Also there is a current problem with sound affecting splashtop if an NVIDIA card is installed possibly linked to the alsa workaround mentioned also.
MAVRELL IDE works but is picky about the jumpper settings on the device. mine would only work with cable select and master mode
intel X4500 seems to run like crap not even loading the intel module. framebuffer/vesa is the only mode that operates with this.
