Description:

This internal DVD writer supports DVD+-RW,DVD+-R, DVD-RAM, DVD+-R DL, CD-R, and CD-RW. It supports LightScribe label printing (I haven't checked into that). The host interface is X3T13 ATA/ATAPI5/1321D, INF-8090i Rev 5.3 (according to box). External dimensions: 146 x 41.3 x 165 mm (W/O Bezel). It comes with an extra Bezel in case the color is not to your liking. It also comes with Windows burning software.
I bought this unit when my existing Plextor DVD burner died. I went to the local Best Buy and grabbed this one since I really needed to back up my data that weekend. I couldn't find any reviews anywhere about this unit's compatibility with Linux, so I took a chance. I paid $75 for the unit new, so it would not be a big loss if it didn't work. It was simple to install. I pulled the old drive out, matched the jumpers on the new drive to match the old drive and plugged everything in. It worked like a champ and was SO much quieter than the old Plextor that it replaced. I would suggest that you skip the quick (paper) installation guide that comes in the box and instead, read the pdf manual that is on the CD that comes with it (if you have access to a machine with a working CD/DVD drive, that is).
I use my unit for reading CDs/DVDs and burning backups of data. I also burn ISOs of different Linux distributions. So far, everything that I have burned has worked. I use K3B to burn the DVDs/CDs. I am currently running Slackware 12.1
