Kernel (uname -r): 2.6.23.1-49.fc8
Distribution: Fedora 8

Using Fedora 8 (FC8) on the VIA C7 EX1000

Basic setup :-

The motherboard was fitted with 1GB DDR2 RAM, 16GB Solid-state HDD and mounted in a "Travla C158 Mini-ITX Case" with a 12VDC, 90W (Silent) PSU. Details - http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=3

The back connectors are non-standard from a PC point of view. The video is DVI (Not SVGA), audio is via two phono sockets (not 3.5mm jack sockets) and keyboard+mouse are via a USB port (not PS2). So, if you are going to use this motherboard on a standard PC setup you probably will need adapters.

Installation was done on a USB DVD Drive.

FC8 found all the hardware and the video was set to a default resolution 1280x720 on my Iiyama 24" widescreen LCD monitor. As far as I could tell all functions were working - Network, video, sound, power management. In fact I am using said machine to write this review.

The video seems to be a potential problem area as there are no drivers for it, however FC8 was able to use a generic VESA driver. Despite having no drivers for the hardware decoders video playback was OK.

VIA only have drivers for FC7 so I will have to wait until they write drivers for FC8 to make full use of my monitor - or- find a way to tweak the FC7 drivers to work with FC8 or tweak my "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file.

Kernel (uname -r): FreeBSD 6.2 Release
Distribution: FreeBSD

Using FreeBSD 6.2 on the VIA C7 EX1000

Basic setup :-

The motherboard was fitted with 1GB DDR2 RAM, 16GB Solid-state HDD, 250GB SATA HDD and mounted in a "Travla C158 Mini-ITX Case" Details - http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=3

The unit was run on a 12~18 Volt DC supply - I intend to try a battery backup later on.

The monitor was a basic SVGA 19" LCD connected to the DVI socket via a SVGA-DVI adapter and the keyboard+mouse were connected via a PS2-USB adapter.

Installation was done on a USB DVD Drive.

As installation is done in text mode, FreeBSD had no trouble displaying it, the network chip was found OK but FreeBSD had no driver for the sound chip that I could see.

Setting up virtual hosting on Apache22, PHP5 and MySQL went with few hitches.

Setting up Xorg was a bit problematic but was solved by adding Modes "1280x1024" to the "Screen" section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. If your monitor is smaller then Modes "1024x768" might work better. I can post my xorg.conf file on here if it helps anyone.
