I use the mass storage mode for copying files (photos, mp3s, ...). The other modes are not of particular interest for me.
No matter which mode you choose, and even when you cancel the mode menu, you will have a network device usb0 available.
I configured the phone to automagically connect via UMTS when USB is plugged in. Combined with a DHCP client you have instant internet without any configuration.
Works really nice.
Concerning not Linux connectivity but the phone's hard- and firmware: the camera lid often opens unintentionally.
Sometimes, especially after using the camera, keyboard lock is off.
Picture quality is OK for snapshots but not as high as with my not too expensive Kodak CX6330.
