For a while, I was using lpd, then converted to cups for the simplicity of not having to deal with console. Cups made it pretty easy to configure the printer. You can specify in cups to print in grayscale.

Supports 600dpi grayscale/color.

The only feature that I wish I could have is to clean the nosels via Linux. I think there's a way to do it on the printer itself...I've been too lazy to figure it out.

Also, a way to tell how much ink is left would be helpful.

I have used this printer for some time now without having any issues what so ever. Using CUPS and connected via USB, this printer worked out of the box.

linuxprinting.org listed it as supported with Linux which where the reason why I bought it in the first place.
Worked fine with MDK 9.1 and 9.2 out of the box as well.

Since I live in the part o fthe world where A4 for paper size is standard, only thing I've noticed is that media size settings are not always kept.

Great printer HP!!
