Description:
|
HP Deskjet 5940 photo inkjet printer with PictBridge port.
Best Supported by CUPS and HPIJS/HPLID, giving up to 1200x1200 dpi print resolution and automatic paper detection under CUPS.
If you use the HPLID interface, this also provides status and maintainance features.
Depending on your version of CUPS you may need to download a ppd from linuxprinting.org.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: PAPER JAMS
On futher use this printer is obviously not suited for the small/home office. It has much higher tendency to jam than any other HP printer I have used, although still low compared to the Lexmark inkjets I have used.
Based on this I would revise my score to a 7 for pure home use, and 4 for anything heavier.

The Deskjet 5940 is a photo quality inkjet printer aimed mainly at the home user. It includes a PictBridge interface, for printing photo's directly from a digital camera.
Like most HP printers, the Deskjet 5940 works excellently under GNU/Linux, with great print quality. On most distributions it will be recognised by CUPS right out the box.
On Slackware 11.0, I just needed to upgrade to CUPS 1.2.4 and hplip 1.6.9 from /testing to do so, of course I could have just downloaded a PPD from linuxprinting.org.
I decided to try the extra features such as status and inklevel monitoring provided by the hplip interface. They all seem to work well, except the 'front panel display' feature, which is not supported by the Deskjet 5940.
I have not tested the PictBrige interface.
I only rate this a 9 because HP limit printing to 1200dpi under linux instead of 4800dpi (intrapolated). If they removed this restriction, i would not hesitate in giving it a 10.
it comes with small colour and small black cartridge. The USB cable is extra.
