The P5B-VM is a small form factor micro ATX M/B that offers a lot of performance for its size.
(At least that was the sexy sales pitch that put it in my hands).
This M/B can be a bit problematic for a newbie, but should be an absolute Rock Show for a capable Linux user.
It requires support for the JMicron 363 ICH8 southbridge chip controller that is only available with the 2.6.18 or later kernels.
It will only boot to BIOS without that support, or (if using a IDE optical drive) load a kernel image into memory, and then stop with a "no hard disk found" warning.
You have been warned. :-)
It can however accomodate the Duo-core processor family of chips, and a ton of 800/667/533 MHz DDR2 memory.
There is onboard gigbit lan from Realtek(RTL8111B), but I've yet to get it to work, however a $19 netgear PCI card does the job.
LAN drivers are provided from ASUS. Some expert research would be appreciated on that.
The reviewed system (that'd be the one I'm talking about here) has been built with a 300 gig Seagate SATA hard drive that is 3Gb/s capable, a gig of 800/MGz DDR2 memory in two 512's for dual interleaving, and an Intel pentium D (915) 2.8GHz chip.
There is an onboard Intel chip video option, or PCIExpress for whatever card you might want.
Currently running a ASUS EN7600GT card (Nvidia chip).
It also has a floppy drive (supported) and an IDE/DVD R/W optical drive.
I'm running Slackware 11.0 using the test26.s kernel.
(Distributions built without JMicron driver support will not install).
It'll run a compiler really fast. Or re-load the entire O/S (all 3.6 Gig's) in 15 minutes.
I wish I didn't need to do that so often, but I digress.............this is supposed to be a review........ :-)
The board also has onboard audio.
Since I've yet to make that work I can't say much about it.
The BIOS is a monster, it contains the most features I've ever seen, and it should come with it's own dictionary (if not it's own solar system).
A good product overall, but it does need some tweaking to get the performance offered.
