This is a great motherboard if you dont want SLI.

There were reported problems with the noise of the chipset fan for the revision 1 of this board. There are also some stability issues with windows (if you are dual booting) but this is fixed by increasing the memory voltage from +2.5V to +2.7V.

I have used this with fedora core 4 and 5 and gentoo 2006.0 with no problems.

Kernel (uname -r): 2.6.15
Distribution: Kubuntu 6.06 amd64

Borys Musielak's configuration (NOT nova's):

* Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ BOX (Socket 939) Venice
* Mainboard: Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra
* Hard drive: Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 GB (SATA II, 16MB cache, NCQ)
* RAM: Kingston HyperX DDR 2x 512MB PC-433 CL2
* Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 Asus Silent 512MB (128-bit) TV/DVI BOX (PCI-E)
* Optical drive: NEC DVD+/-RW ND-4571A LabelFlash

motherboard ethernet port: works.
motherboard integrated sound: works.

"The Live-CD version of Kubuntu loaded in 2 minutes featuring the complete KDE desktop to play with. There was an icon on the desktop called “Install” which triggers the installer and that was the first thing I clicked on. Installing a system off a Live-CD is a great thing."

> formatting his partitions as ext3 was successful.
> cd installation finished successfully.

his Kubuntu desktop booted and it detected and configured all his hardware, but for the video card it used the default, free nv driver.

fixing the video card driver install:
He used EasyUbuntu to install the nvidia drivers, and some other things (like quicktime).

next,
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
"When the text wizard (which is invoked with the dpkg-reconfigure command) asks about the driver, we need to select nvidia instead of the previously used nv. Upon next KDE login, the X acceleration should work."

Kernel (uname -r): 2.6.18.2-34-default
Distribution: SuSE 10.2, Slackware 11.0

System Specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
Memory : Corsair XMS 1GB (2x512MB)
GPU : XFX NVidia GeForce 7600GT
HDD : Seagate 7200.9 320GB SATA, 2 Seagate 7200.9 250GB
IDE
Optical : NEC 16X DVD±R DVD IDE/ATAPI Model ND-3550A

Main boot drive is one of the IDE drives. The 2nd IDE drive is a data drive. The SATA drive is partitioned for a 100GB NTFS Windows installation with the remainder as a 3rd data drive for Linux.

Have had no issues with Linux, per se. I have had some trouble with the dual boot, which I have not been able to pin on any one cause other than some difficulty with Windows being on the SATA drive while the boot loader is on one of the IDE drives. I use GRUB in a triple boot configuration, with both Linux installations being on the main IDE drive and Windows, as mentioned, on the SATA drive. Specifically what occurs is that after booting Windows and then shutting down, when I restart, the MBR has been overwritten, necessitating a reinstall of GRUB. No regular pattern has developed, and I am not sure whether this is a problem with this mobo or its BIOS or with the configuration I have established.

Other than this, I have had no problems at all with this board running my Linux installations after three months of heavy use, this being the general time period after which the first revision of the board would experience a chipset fan burnout.

Highly recommended for those who don't want to pay extra for SLI and who have absolutely no use for it.
