Description: The scanner uses built-in jpeg compression for faster scanning and data transfer. The image quality is mediocre.

The scanner comes with Windows software (PaperPort); I haven't checked the WINE compatibility list yet for that...

Well it should be compatible, but as posts in different forums indicate, not fully integrateable in SANE.

SUSE recognises the scanner during install and installs a USB driver for it. However, this driver does not seem to work properly; the scanner is not recognised when the system is running.

I have found third party USB drivers at http://www.littlecms.com/iphoto/ot.tar.gz .
Alas, the drivers are in source format which would require something I haven't done yet in Linux (configure, make, make install).

There is another page with visioneer drivers:
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/stevenel/scanner/
but not for the 8600, although the chipset should be compatible with Primax 19200 and visioneer 7600. I haven't tried them yet.
