Bought this laptop two and a half years ago and been happy with it ever since.
All hardware but the cardreader work like a charm.
To get the full 1400x1050 resolution you need 855resolution: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/apoirier/
The IrDA works with the nsc driver included with the kernel.
The 802.11b WiFi needs ipw2100: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ipw2100
The special keys on the top of the keyboard can be used with acerhk: http://freshmeat.net/projects/acerhk/
The VGA out and LCD screen can be activated and deactivated runtime with the i810switch tool:http://www16.plala.or.jp/mano-a-mano/i810switch.html
The modem needs the slmodem kernel module: http://www.smlink.com/content.aspx?id=135
Sadly, the modem driver only works up to kernel version 2.6.9 and earlier.
All these software is included with ROCK Linux these days.
Even after those 2.5 years the battery (when using speedstepping and cpufreqd) lasts around 4 hours but has lost 25% of its efficiency.
All in all a laptop that "just works".
