Alcatel Speedtouch USB is the USB modem for ADSL connectivity, distributed by Alcatel and specially famous in Europe. In Venezuela it was distributed by CANTV.NET (www.cantv.net) with no Linux support. After failed attempts installing it in Mandrake Linux 9.0, now it works fine in Knoppix 3.3 (Debian GNU/Linux)
Finally got it working with the help from the guys at http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net and Steve Parker at http://steve-parker.org/sh/speedtouchconf.shtml. So far so good, after a week it's still working :)
getting everything sorted was hard work as my native os is windows; bounced off the learning curve a couple of times but learned a lot in the process... for noobs every where who are having trouble with this modem, the links above will prove invaluable (well, they did to me). Plenty more links on those sites for more references...

Had a hell of a time using the speedtouchconf script, never got it to work. Finally found the kernel space driver and used that by following the howto, not using the speedbundle. If all the bundle auto stuff fails, learn how they work and do it yourself, its actually pretty easy!
Oh and i never got it to work under mandrake 9.2, thats why i switched to slack. I haven't looked back since!

have had loads of problems trying to get my Alcatel Speedtouch usb modem working through Linux.
First off I tryed the modem installation wizard but when i tryed to select the hardware the only device present was my ethernet card (realtrek etc)
i then ran the idots guide and the shell script, (from the links in earlyer posts) initially this seemed to work, my modem lights flashed and the rest,
however i said that a conection was made but there was a DNS error, i have no idea why, or how to fix it,
can anyone offer me any advice to fix this problem???????????
any segestions will be appreciated!!!!!

Works perfect with drivers from 'speedtouch.sourceforge.net'.
Get the package (I use 1.3.1) and firmware, run the script, answer questions.
ready to go.

I spent ages trying to get this to work with the 2.4 kernel in MEPIS, the script kept freezing, and it would not budge. However, following the instructions on http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net on the 2.6 kernel it worked a charm. It runs at full speed (2.2 MB/Sec!!!) and hasn't failed yet. I do get a seemingly harmless error message saying that something or another failed, but it still works :)
