With its high 48x CD-R read/write capabilities, it doubles as one speedy CD writer as well.

The 3540A is capable of writing to both DVD R and DVD-R media at the current highest speed of 16x.

Its most impressive feature is its ability to write to double layer media at much higher speeds. It is capable of writing to DVD R DL media at 8x.

As mentioned earlier, the ND-3540A is one of the first drives to hit the market supporting high write speed to the new DVD-R DL format. It can write to this media at 6x and we will be testing this with some new DVD-R DL media a bit later.

Much higher writing is also supported to rewritable DVD media, featuring 8x write support to DVD RW discs.

Higher 6x write speeds to DVD-RW discs is also supported. This time, thanks to Verbatim, we are well prepared to test these capabilities.

club.cdfreaks.com has an NEC specific forum with a few 3rd party firmware offering even greater speed and compatability and even more bonus features.

Works flawlessly here in Kanotix(debian unstable)
k3b
dvddecrypter and dvdshrink useing wine works flawlessly with this burner.

Very fast. Burned a Fedora core 4 DVD in 5 min. and then it verified it in another 5, using K3B. Burns CD's for me in about 3 min. flat. No problems here.

Kernel (uname -r): 2.6.15-19-386 AND 2.6.10-5-386
Distribution: ubuntu hoary and ubuntu dapper

Drive had constant read errors. Went back to NEC and then returned "fixed". Can play DVDs, burn DVDs, but gets read errors on its own DVDs still. Drive craps out and stops responding to everything (umount -l /dev/hdc being the only thing which does anything, then eject /dev/hdc fails to work) with sickening motor sounds that only a reboot can fix.

I tried many different media. I have also replaced my 80wire IDE which was fairly long with an ultra-short shielded 80wire IDE, so the possibility of EMI is ruled out. It could be something to do with both versions (hoary and dapper) of ubuntu that I am using, but if you google around there are other people with other problems with this drive on other distros.

I strongly recommend against this drive as, for me, the drive doesn't work as a DVDR and is not fit for sale as such.

I put "AUD" after $80 but it was cropped. So the $80 I state refers to Australian dollars.
