Description: Canon PIXMA iP5000 is a good choice for a small/home office user needs as well as for occasional photo quality printing. The printer lacks direct network connectivity support found in PIXMA iP4000R model. However, it is a brief to setup using turboprint. Without the turboprint software the best I could achive is grey scale printing using one of the Canon bubblejet printer drivers for CUPS.
So if you end up with a PIXMA printer and want it to be a fully functional asset on your linux desk space spend an extra $30 on turboprint - it helps to develop new drivers and ,in the end, saves a lot of headache during the setup.
Note for x86_64 architecture: I tried setting it up using turboprint downloaded software for x86_64 on Fedora Core 4 x86_64, but I had trouble with libstdc in lib64. Work around - get i386 package (I am only testify for RPM packages and Fedora Core 4 on x86_64).

Kernel (uname -r):

The printer works great in the MS Windows environment. It works well as a B/W printer in Linux (Ubuntu), but as a color print - NO.

I have left some emails with Canon to get a Linux driver, but they just responded with the terse "We don't provide Linux support". Based on that closed minded response, I would say don't buy this printer (assuming that it is still available for sale.) or any Canon printer.
