The dongle works as expected and can be used to connect to my Nokia 6810 phone. Files can be transferred to and from the phone and using Wammu I can send messages, make calls etc.
The installation required some fiddling, but using the wiki bluetooth howto "http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_mobile_phone,_Bluetooth_and_GNOME"
I eventually got the dongle working
