The driver did not come with the Mandrake installation CD-ROM and I had to download a driver from www.broadcom.com/drivers/downloaddrivers.php .
I dual boot with WinXP Pro On a hpCOMPAQ d230 microtower Pentium 4 256 RAM .
The driver is available as a .src.rpm file or a .tar.gz archive.
I downloaded the .src.rpm file. The installation instructions are available in an accompanying text file.
I followed the instructions and the bcm4400.o driver file was saved into a /var/tmp/ subdirectory. The report status of the driver installation mentioned the location of the built driver. I manually copied the driver to /lib/modules/2.2.15/misc/ because the driver is produced for Red Hat distribution(2.2x and 2.4x kernel) .
Take care to remove previously installed NIC drivers before loading bcm4401.o .
For dualbooting with WInXP, if Network Cable becomes Unplugged, turn off the computer and turn on instead of simply Restarting. Strangely, as for as WinXP networking is concerned, Restart is different from Turn Off/Turn On .
If connecting NIC direct to NIC (without a hub) use a well crimped correctly connected(see www.incentre.net/incentre/frame/ethernet.html) crossover cable. I made my own cable to be sure of my connection.
I configure the NIC with Linuxconf utility (simply type linuxconf from the command line when logged in as root)
So far, I will leave a rating of 7. Good of Broadcom to have the drivers available through their home page.

On RedHat 9 I had download and install the drivers manualy, but then it worked fine.
But on Mandrake 9.2 its included and it was automaticly set during the installation.
Remember that you probaly have to set a PPPoE connection, in Mandrake 9.2 you can do it with TKpppoe. Works fine.
Great! Works as fine as in Windows 98 and XP

the b44 (experimental) driver seems to drop once in a while when I use the laptop at school (via dhcp), broadcome's own driver does not have this prob.

Got this NIC on an MSI motherboard.

Couldn't get the b44 driver supplied with kernel 2.6.6 to work at all. So I built the vendor's own one, bcm4400, and that worked fine.

I am Linux newborn (again)

On installation, the Broadcom 4401 NIC is detected and after configuring the network properties, the adapter is enabled.

All should be well, but the card just does not seem to be making contact with the outside world (i.e., I can't access the WWW through my browser).

The Windows boot of this hardware has always worked fine.

(?) Is this still a possible driver problem? Or does the network configuration need more than the IP address, sub mask, gateway, and DNS ?

(?) how can I ping from Linux?

This NIC worked just fine in my dell i6000. Just build it as a module in the kernel and autoload b44 at boot, presto, it works.
